My Favorite High-Protein, Low-Carb Shake

I created this protein shake recipe years ago when I was deep into tracking my macros. I needed something high in protein and lower in carbs, and this blend fit into my daily routine perfectly.

When I first started drinking protein shakes, I used vanilla protein powder with strawberries, bananas, and blueberries. But the powder I was using had a lot of carbs—and when you add bananas on top of that, it just didn’t work for my goals.

So I started experimenting with chocolate. I’m not a big fan of red berries with chocolate, but I do like blueberries, so I cut out the strawberries (and bananas, for the carb count) and added avocado instead—for a boost of fiber and healthy fat.

I also love adding a tablespoon of flaxseed. It brings an extra 3 grams of both fiber and protein to the shake, plus it’s a great source of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, which support brain health and help reduce inflammation. These ingredients really work well together.

To sneak in more nutrients, I toss in a handful of spinach too—it’s basically flavorless in shakes, but gives a nice nutritional boost.

As for the protein powder, I searched online for something clean and low in carbs and found Isopure. I love it! It has a great chocolate flavor, and while I’m usually not a fan of stevia, it’s not overpowering in this one. One scoop has just 2g of carbs and 25g of protein. You can find it on Amazon here — I even added it to my Subscribe & Save so I never run out.
